Verb–Adverb Pairing

The #1 Band 5→6 error in Task 1. Students know the verbs. They break down on the pairing. Study the cheat sheet, then take the drill.

Examiner's Cheat Sheet — Natural Pairs

↑ Upward

rise steadily rise sharply surge dramatically climb gradually increase significantly grow steadily

↓ Downward

fall sharply decline steadily plummet steeply dip slightly drop marginally

↔ Volatile / Stable

fluctuate considerably vary widely level off plateau remain stable

⚠ Broken pairs — avoid

surge gradually plummet slowly increase fastly went up dramatically

Word order rule:

Both "fell sharply" and "sharply fell" are grammatically correct — but verb + adverb is standard Task 1 style. Use adverb + verb only for emphasis at the start of a clause.

Noun ↔ Verb Swap

Band 7 requires grammatical range — the same observation must be expressible in both noun and verb structures. This is what separates Band 6 from Band 7 in GRA and LR.

The core pattern:

Verb form X increased significantly between 2000 and 2010.
Noun form There was a significant increase in X between 2000 and 2010.

Note: the adverb significantly becomes the adjective significant when you switch to noun form. This is the most common error.
